At this year's DGHD2022 in Paderborn, the German Society for Higher Education Pedagogy (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Hochschuldidaktik: DGHD) awarded Dr. Joshua Weidlich for his dissertation on the topic of social presence in online distance education. Supervised by Prof. Dr. Theo Bastiaens, he conducted his dissertation at FernUniversität in Hagen, the largest distance education provider in Germany. The jury commended the scientific merits of advancing this line of research while also providing ample practical implications for higher education teaching. I was able to meet so many exciting people and studies, and I think that we German universities have benefited especially from the intersectional and feminist perspectives from the USA, Canada and the Netherlands: How do transgender students experience support in Computer Science? What can universities do to keep students of colour and especially women* of colour longer in STEM programmes? On 11.7.2022, team members of the HIKOF-DL project held its third meeting with the project committee members consisting of industry partners. The partner companies / institutions include Goethe Business School, Provadis, GIZ, Deutsche Bahn, Mercedes Benz, Academie für Bildungsforschung und Lehrerbildung. The three project leaders are Prof. Dr. Hendrik Drachsler, Prof. Dr. Andreas Frey (Goethe University Frankfurt) and Dr. David Weiss (studiumDigitale, Goethe University Frankfurt). In the meeting, Prof. Dr. Hendrik Drachsler and team members presented the ongoing research work namely the pilot study involving the course "Einführung in Unterricht sowie Diagnostik und Beratung" taught by Prof. Dr. Andreas Frey, with ca. 1000 students. On 23.06. - 24.06.2022 Hendrik Drachsler and Daniele Di Mitri were invited to organise a session at the Didactics Working Groups (FDAKs) to present the concept of Learning Analytics applied to teaching and learning science (physics and mathematics) in the universities of applied sciences in German (Hochschulen). The didactics working groups, invited colleagues from all over Bavaria, Baden-Wuttenberg, Hessen and North Rehin Westalia to exchange ideas on teaching (content, methods, etc.). The Mathematics/Physics working group is currently headed by Prof. Dr. Elmar Junker from the Technical University of Rosenheim and Prof. Dr. Thomas Skill organized by the Bochum University of Applied Sciences. The run was 5.6 km long (3.5 miles) and went through the main city of Frankfurt am Main. For the EduTec DIPF team was an occasion to promote healthy lifestyle at work and fun community activities.

At this year's JTEL summer school in Halkidiki, Greece (see previous blog post here), Joshua Weidlich presented a workshop on the topic of causal inference and causal graphs. The goal of this workshop was to equip young educational technology researchers with a toolkit for reasoning about causality and improving causal inference in their own research studies. Central to this approach are Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs), simple visual structures that encode variables and hypothesized causal effects. The resulting graphs can then be inspected with a few simple rules to learn whether a) causal inference is possible, b) bias is present.
