New Pub: Feedback sources in essay writing: peer-generated or AI-generated feedback?

A newly published article discusses the use of peer feedback as a learning strategy, particularly in large classes where teachers face heavy workloads. For complex tasks like writing argumentative essays, peers may struggle to provide high-quality feedback due to the cognitive demands involved. The emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, like ChatGPT, raises the question of whether AI can serve as a new feedback source for such tasks. To investigate this, a study compared ChatGPT-generated feedback with peer feedback on argumentative essays written by 74 graduate students from a Dutch university. The study collected essay data, peer feedback and ChatGPT-generated feedback, and then analyzed them using coding schemes. Results showed significant differences between ChatGPT and peer feedback, with ChatGPT offering more descriptive feedback while peers focused on identifying essay problems.…

On May 12, 2023, the Highly Informative Learning Analytics (HILA) research program of the EduTec@DIPF, studiumdigitale@Goethe University Frankfurt and the Open Learning and Instruction group@Open Universiteit was presented by Hendrik Drachsler at the main campus of the Open University of the Netherlands. The release of the HILA research program marks a significant milestone for the collaboration in the field of learning analytics between of the Dutch-German research collective.  The HILA research program is focused on developing new tools and methods to collect, analyze, and interpret data that can help educational institutions to understand the learning process better. As part of the program's launch, a keynote by Ioana Jivet on student-facing learning analytics was provided. A new system demonstration paper authored by Lukas Menzel, Sebastian Gombert, Daniele Di Mitri and Henrik Drachsler has been released as part of the ECTEL 2022 proceedings. In this paper, we present Hyperchalk, a self-hosted collaborative online whiteboard software. Similar to commercial solutions like Miro or Flinga, this software provides users with collaborative boards which they can use to draw, write or sketch together. However, unlike commercial solutions, Hyperchalk allows for collecting rich log data, which can be used to study the behaviour of its users and to allow Learning Analytics and studies on computer-supported collaborative learning. Ziel des Projekts ist die Entwicklung eines virtualisierten Qualifizierungsangebotes für Lehrende, mit dem sie Methodenwissen und digitale Kompetenzen erwerben können, um eigene Lehr-/Lernszenarien so zu gestalten, dass Potenziale innovativer Bildungstechnologien zum Tragen kommen. Die Lehrenden lernen dabei Methoden und Tools kennen, die während der Qualifizierung zum Einsatz kommen (didaktischer Doppeldecker) und mit denen sie innovative Lehre umsetzen können. Das Qualifizierungsangebot wird kompatibel mit der nationalen Bildungsplattform umgesetzt. “Soul and body, I suggest reacting sympathetically upon each other. A change in the state of the soul produces a change in the shape of the body and conversely, a change in the shape of the body produces a change in the state of the soul.” To test this hypothesis proposed by Aristotle, our bachelor student Tetiana Buraha investigated the physiology of students performing task-switching exercises. The physiological data were collected using an Empatica E4 band. The performances of the students were compared against the physiological data using descriptive statistics and machine learning techniques. The analysis of Tetiana enabled the identification of interesting correlations between galvanic skin response and performance, and models to predict performance based on the physiological data.
