GREAT project featured in the Global Young Academy magazine

DIPF member and GREAT project manager, Dr. Jane Yau, is also a member of the Global Young Academy (2022-27), where its mission is giving a voice to young scientists around the world. In 2022-2023, she was the co-editor of the Connections Magazine, which is an annual magazine of the Global Young Academy, featuring peer-reviewed articles of its members. This year’s magazine explores the theme “Innovative Technologies for improved well-being”. The magazine is additionally circulated at working events attended by the Global Young Academy office team, for example, those organised by The World Academy of Sciences and European Young Academies etc. As co-Editor-at-Large, Jane also wrote an article about “Technological innovations for advancing quality education, gender equality and climate action”. MILKI-PSY Consortial Meeting in Berlin

The fourth face-to-face meeting of the MILKI-PSY research consortium took place on July 12 and 13, 2023 at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence in Berlin. The DIPF members: Dr Daniele Di Mitri, Dr Jan Schneider, Gianluca Romano and Fernando P. Cardenas-Hernandez shared their progress on how to address the technical and mental aspects of athletes' learning process through technologies such as Inertial-Measurement-Unit-sensors and Virtual-Reality-headsets. In the same context, they also exchanged ideas with the other project partners, led by Prof. Dr. Roland Klemke of the Cologne Game Lab of TH Cologne, on how to create, integrate and evaluate a common psychomotor training environment and plan future studies in this field.

On 10-11 July 2023, a representative of the GREAT project was invited to give a plenary talk at the “Young Minds in Technology Advancements” in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which is the Science and Education Leadership Training event for young scientists at the Malaysian Young Academy. For the purpose of this event, Jane developed a plenary talk titled “Achieving 21st Century Education and Skills to advance Sustainable Development Goals”, which was presented by Dr. Sri Fatmawati from the Global Young Academy, as Jane could not be in-person at the event. During 6-8 June 2023, Ioana Jivet participated in the first in-person Learning Analytics Summer Institute (LASI) since 2019, hosted by the National University of Singapore (NUS). The event included a keynote delivered by NUS President Prof. Tan Eng Chye on how NUS is supporting education with educational data, a keynote delivered by Prof. Rebecca Ferguson on the current challenges and opportunities of the field of learning analytics (LA), an expert panel discussing the role of LA in the age of AI and a series of tutorials and workshops conducted by various professionals in the field of LA. Workshop: Teacher Dashboards supported by AI-generated Feedback @ JTEL Summer School 2023

At the JTEL Summer School 2023 in La Manga, Spain, we hosted the “Teacher Dashboards supported by AI-generated Feedback” workshop. In this workshop, the Learning Analytics Cockpit (LA Cockpit), a tool developed by us, was presented and optimized by the participants. The LA Cockpit is a teacher dashboard that allows teachers to view the learning status of students through different visualizations and to interact with these visualizations to send feedback to (individual or groups of) students through a feedback system to “steer" the learning process. After a short intro on teacher dashboards and feedback theory, the tool with its visual feedback system was be tested "hands-on" by all participants in the workshop. Workshop @ JTELSS – Visualizing Real-World Learning Analytics

In this workshop, Atezaz Ahmad, Kamran Mir, Jan Schneider and Daniele Di Mitri presented two datasets (IWWB and Presentation Trainer) to the participants. There were three main tasks: Investigate the datasets and how it could be used to design analytics dashboards. - Participants were asked to use HyperChalk and OpenLAIR to design their solutions. What are some limitations of the current datasets. - List the problems/issues with the datasets and how to improve them. What indicators will we get from this datasets. - List/Name the indicators. At the end of the workshop, we asked the participants to fill out a survey. The survey was about evaluating the IWWB+ analytics dashboard. Here are some pictures of the results:

Horizon Europe & UKRI #GREATProjectGG "Games Realising Effective and Affective Transformation" dissemination activities were underway at the International Conference of Young Scientists, held in conjunction with the Global Young Academy Annual General Meeting, Kigali, Rwanda, 5-9 June, 2023. As part of the Science Education for Youth workshop, Jane shared the project with Global Young Academy members and also external guests. New pub: Causal reasoning with causal graphs, published in ETRD

Educational Technology, like many other empirical research fields, needs to provide evidence for the causal effectiveness of their interventions. This is as important for establishing the efficacy of some novel educational technology as it is for theory-building. However, because educational research, especially field research, can be messy, tightly-controlled randomized experiments are not always the best option. Importantly, as our development paper shows, this does not mean that researchers should abandon all claims of causality. Instead, we highlight the importance of explicit causal reasoning, while equipping researchers with a tool to approach this daunting task systematically. Causal graphs (or Directed Acyclic Graphs = DAGs) are a low-barrier approach to reasoning about causality in all research contexts. New Pub: A checklist to guide the planning, designing, implementation, and evaluation of learning analytics dashboards

Higher education institutions are moving to design and implement teacher-facing learning analytics (LA) dashboards with the hope that instructors can extract deep insights about student learning and make informed decisions to improve their teaching. While much attention has been paid to developing teacher-facing dashboards, less is known about how they are designed, implemented and evaluated. This paper presents a systematic literature review of existing studies reporting on teacher-facing LA dashboards. Out of the 1968 articles retrieved from several databases, 50 articles were included in the final analysis. Guided by several frameworks, articles were coded based on the following dimensions: purpose, theoretical grounding, stakeholder involvement, ethics and privacy, design, implementation, and evaluation criteria. HIKOF-DL Presentation at the University Future Festival

Jane, as the project-coordinator, presented HIKOF-DL in the Track - AI & Technology, at the University Future Festival on 27.4.2023. Abstract: During the COVID-19 pandemic, we made use of artificial intelligence and learning analytics technologies for both lecturers’ and students’ online teaching and learning gains. Using these technologies, the team designed and implemented novel ways of providing highly-informative competence driven feedback (hicof) to large classes of university students (≈1000) for three innovative online assignments. We built machine learning models to automatically assess the assignments and reduced the time required for staff to manually grade them. High-informative feedback provides correct solutions, possibilities for improvement, hints on self-regulation and effective learning strategies (Wisniewski, Zierer and Hattie, 2020; Winne & Hadwin, 2008), and on two different levels - Feed Up (concerning their understanding of the learning goal) and Feed Forward (concerning their next steps in their learning process) (Hattie & Timberley, 2007).
