Aznarte is a researcher at the Artificial Intelligence Department of the Spanish Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia – UNED (one of the biggest universities in Europe) and deputy vice rector for digitalization and innovation. He co-leads UNED's ambitious ED3 project ("Distance, Digital and Data-based Education"), which revolves around the improvement possibilities offered by massive-data-based technologies and other AI tools in the framework of learning/teaching processes, particularly in hybrid face-to-face and remote settings. During his stay at DIPF, Professor José L. Aznarte will study the digitalization problem in comparative terms, aiming at getting to know the experiences at DIPF and at…

International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Artificial Intelligence, Digitalisation, Event, Learning Analytics, Team
So exciting! Today is the "International Day of Women and Girls in Science", initiated by the UN and celebrated annually worldwide on 11 February to promote girls and women in science and research, especially in STEM subjects. Today our members of the EduTec Team,Dana Kube, is having a lunch appointment online at Eindhoven EAISI, where she will exchange ideas with other European women scientists on the topic of "Women in AI"! There is now a global network of women experts in AI and robotics who are advocating for gender-just, ethical and responsible solutions for the benefit of society. Today they are talking about how we in Europe can close the gender gap in AI and robotics and increase women's participation through mentoring, hackathons, and educational initiatives. We are very much…

Artificial intelligence for supporting disadvantaged learners

Artificial Intelligence, Assessment, School
[caption id="attachment_3685" align="alignleft" width="300"] The Mitchell County High School[/caption] Can Artificial Intelligence support disadvantaged teenagers in improving their mathematics and reading skills? Doctoral candidate Rashmi Khazanchi is investigating this relevant research question in her PhD project conducted with the supervision of Prof Hendrik Drachsler at the Open University of The Netherlands and Dr Daniele Di Mitri at the DIPF. Mrs Khazanchi is a mathematic and science teacher at the Mitchell County High School, located in the rural area of Camilla, in the southwest of Georgia, United States. The school offers generalist education as preparation for college and vocation and professional training. The high school is a publicly funded school system, and the majority of its student population are African American people. Several of these young students live in modest socio-economic…

Team of EduTec and TBA Members Wins Runners-Up Prize @ NAEP Reading Automated Scoring Challenge

Artificial Intelligence, Assessment, Award, Computational Psychometrics, School
The NAEP Reading Automated Scoring Challenge was a competition which was held in late 2021 by the National Center for Education (USA). The goal was to evaluate the applicability of natural language processing methodology to the task of scoring of large scale constructed response assessment data. In addition to this, participating models were also required to be interpretable and free of algorithmic bias against different student demographics. The data set which was used to evaluate the systems consisted of responses from 4th and 8th grade school student to 20 different reading comprehension tasks. More than a dozen different teams from universities and private assessment companies submitted contributions. Out of these, 12 contributions, including ours, were selected as eligible with respect to interpretability and algorithmic fairness. These contributions were then ranked…

New Pub: Systematic Analysis of international EduTec Masters programs

New Pub: Systematic Analysis of international EduTec Masters programs

Higher Education, Journal, Publication
Scientific fields share their knowledge and recruit young researchers by offering discipline-specific study programs. Thus, study programs are a reflection of the fields they represent. As technology-enhanced learning is considered to be particularly interdisciplinary and heterogenous, it is important to better understand the landscape of study programs that represents the field. Similar to its broader and longer-established counterpart, educational technology, the research focus of TEL has led to interdisciplinary perspectives integrating theories and methods from education, psychology, and computer science. The term has not only been used to describe a research domain, it has also been the foundation for a number of higher education study programs. At the same time, there is a relative lack of research that has systematically reviewed topics, themes, and trends of curricula in study programs…

The EduTec team wishes you a very merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Team
As we look back at this past year 2021, we look back on a year filled with many moments that have brought us joy, pride and contentment. Joy because of the new members that have joined our EduTec team in the past year that have enriched us not only academically but also on a personal level. Pride because of highlights such as a best paper award at the LAK21 conference, Daniele Di Mitri being elected AI Newcomer 2021 at the KI-Camp 2021 and Dana Kube being chosen as a role model from the women network “net4tec” to name a few. Contentment because despite the many restrictions the pandemic has caused in the past year, we have managed to accomplish quite a lot: over 20 publications; the organization of events such…

Special issue: Adoption of learning technologies in times of pandemic crisis

Publication, Special Issue
Despite the promises made and the many and varied national and international projects to adopt and roll out new educational technologies and interventions for elementary, secondary, and higher education, long-lasting institutional technology adoption has been hampered by a lack of continuous funding and resources to achieve the continued buy-in of stakeholders. The real impact of daily learning and teaching practices has been rather small and quickly fades out after a project has been completed. The COVID-19 crisis forced all education providers to move their complete teaching concepts online. This rapid change was also coined as Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT). In this Special Issue, we put a finger on the pulse of this rapid change from traditional to ERT and online learning. We aimed to collect empirical data about behavioural and…
