The alliance of more than 25 organizations from the fields of civil society, culture, science, business, welfare and the public sector unites a common goal: to promote digital participation in Germany. Prof. Dr. Hendrik Drachsler contributes a talk on highly informative and data-driven feedback with AI in higher education. Feedback is a powerful element of all learning processes. However, it is difficult to offer highly informative feedback to large groups of learners. New Pub: Extending Social Presence Theory

In the area of online learning and distance education, social presence is considered a key concept to understand interpersonal processes that are mediated by technology. At the same time, theory surrounding social presence remains underdeveloped. For example, under which conditions is social presence particularly important? Do students always need high perceptions of social presence in their learning experiences? A strong theory should provide tentative answers to questions like these. Yet, as of now, our knowledge is mostly restricted to correlations coefficients between measures of social presence and outcome variables like satisfaction. Without further nuance, learning designers do not know under which circumstances they should prioritize designing for interpersonal aspects or instead focus on other aspects. Studiumdigitale at Goethe University Frankfurt has created an informative video to introduce the HIKOF-DL project. HIKOF-DL stands for Hoch Informatives und Kompetenzorientiertes Feedback für das Digitale Lernen and is funded by the Hessen Ministry for Digital Strategy and Development from 2021-2024. Prof. Dr. Hendrik Drachsler, Prof. Dr. Andreas Frey as well as Dr. David Weiss are project leaders of this interdisciplinary project. [caption id="attachment_4163" align="aligncenter" width="640"] The DIPF team at JP Morgan 2022[/caption] On Wednesday 8th June 2022 part of the EduTec team together with other colleagues from the DIPF joined the annual corporate JP Morgan run in Frankfurt a run which is organised in various cities in the world including New York, Shanghai, Sydney and Buenos Aires. The run was 5.6 km long (3.5 miles) and went through the main city of Frankfurt am Main. For the EduTec DIPF team was an occasion to promote healthy lifestyle at work and fun community activities.

From May 21 to 28, the 16th version of the EATEL Summer School on Technology-Enhanced Learning (JTELSS 2022) was held in the city of Halkidiki, Greece, whose purpose is to promote the dissemination of research in the area of Technology Enhanced Learning and encourage international cooperation between researchers, students and people interested in this topic. At this year’s JTEL summer school in Halkidiki, Greece (see previous blog post here), Daniele Di Mitri and Jan Schneider together with Prof Roland Klemke and Dr Bibeg Limbu, contributed in a mini-track on Artificial Intelligence in Education. The mini-track started with the session "Artificial Intelligence in Education, Multimodal Learning Experience and Ethics of AI (MAIED)". The purpose of this session was to provide an overview of all the topic of AI in Education and Multimodal Learning Experiences. Workshop @JTELSS – Causal Reasoning for TEL researchers

At this year's JTEL summer school in Halkidiki, Greece (see previous blog post here), Joshua Weidlich presented a workshop on the topic of causal inference and causal graphs. The goal of this workshop was to equip young educational technology researchers with a toolkit for reasoning about causality and improving causal inference in their own research studies. Central to this approach are Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs), simple visual structures that encode variables and hypothesized causal effects. The resulting graphs can then be inspected with a few simple rules to learn whether a) causal inference is possible, b) bias is present. JTELSS is the premier event of the European Educational Technology community to support early career researcher and connect them with their peers. Three years after the last summer school of the European Association for Technology-enhanced Learning (EATEL) hosted in Italy, PhD students and Postdocs of the EduTec Team visited this year's summer school in Haldikidi, Greece. More than 140 participants from 27 countries met in the wonderful and sunny area of Halkidiki, Greece to present their research, to network and establish connections. The program consisted of cutting edge topics like Artificial Intelligence in Education, Immersive Technologies (AR, VR), and Robotics, as well as methodological (e.g. qualitative research methods; causal inference) and soft-skills workshops (e.g. project management; how to present your research). We welcome Andrea Zanellati, who will be visiting the EduTec team at DIPF in Frankfurt until the mid of September. Andrea is a Doctoral Researcher in Data Science & Computation at the University of Bologna with a background as a math and physics teacher. His main interest is in the application of machine learning techniques to analyze educational data and enhance learning and teaching processes. During the first year of his doctoral activity, he mainly focused on the development of AI tools for the early detection of students at risk of school dropout or underachievement. This early-stage research highlights the urgency to design ad-hoc indicators to trace students’ learning and increase the explainability of AI tools for the educational field.
