Due to popular request, we’ve pulled together a list of peer-reviewed scientific journals and conferences where research into Educational Technologies and Learning Analytics is published. Although the list is surely not comprehensive, it may be used as a handy overview to learn about the breadth and diversity of this area of research as well the publication outlets that the EduTec team reads and values. The journals are sorted by the main scientific publishing houses, Elsevier, Taylor & Francis, Springer, Wiley, and Sage. Journals that did not fit, either because they are published by a less represented publishing house (thus, not warranting its own category) or are published by scientific societies or universities, are listed under “Other”. Best Paper award @LAK21 – Quantum of Choice

Learning analytics dashboards (LADs) are designed as feedback tools for learners, but until recently, learners rarely have had a say in how LADs are designed and what information they receive through LADs. To overcome this shortcoming, we have developed a customisable LAD for Coursera MOOCs on which learners can set goals and choose indicators to monitor. Following a mixed-methods approach, we analyse 401 learners’ indicator selection behaviour in order to understand the decisions they make on the LAD and whether learner goals and self-regulated learning skills influence these decisions. We found that learners overwhelmingly chose indicators about completed activities. Goals are not associated with indicator selection behaviour, while help-seeking skills predict learners’ choice of monitoring their engagement in discussions and time management skills predict learners’ interest in procrastination indicators. Learning Analytics Workshop at DELFI 2020

On behalf of the Arbeitskreis Learning Analytics (Learning Analytics Working Group of the German Informatics Society) the digLL innovation-forum Trusted Learning Analytics organised and lead the workshop Learning Analytics on 14th September 2020 as part of the pre-conference workshops of the biggest German eLearning conference DELFI. Due to corona the workshop was fully online. This year, the workshop was focused on „Trusted Learning Analytics“ lead by Oliver Herrmann of the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main and „Data Literacy“ with Sven Judel of the RWTH Aachen.

TLA presented at Learning Analytics Learning Network (LALN)

On 4th September 2020 Oliver Herrmann presented the current state of Trusted Learning Analytics (TLA) at a Learning Analytics Learning Network (LALN) workshop. LALN is a worldwide network of LA researchers. The workshop was held as a video conference as part of DELFI, Germany’s leading eLearning research conference. After the presentation, the meaning of “trusted” have been discussed in an international context, that brought new perspectives to be included in further research on TLA.

Towards Real-Time Multimodal Feedback with the CPR Tutor

We developed the CPR Tutor, a real-time multimodal feedback system for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training. The CPR Tutor detects mistakes using recurrent neural networks for real-time time-series classification. From a multimodal data stream consisting of kinematic and electromyographic data, the CPR Tutor system automatically detects the chest compressions, which are then classified and assessed according to five performance indicators. Based on this assessment, the CPR Tutor provides audio feedback to correct the most critical mistakes and improve the CPR performance. To test the validity of the CPR Tutor, we first collected the data corpus from 10 experts used for model training. Which Strategies are Used in the Design of Technical LA Infrastructure? A Qualitative Interview Study

At the end of April the EDUCON2020 – IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference took place. The Educational Technologies team managed to contribute with a full research paper and a short paper. The full research by George Ciordas-Hertel has the title: "Which Strategies are Used in the Design of Technical LA Infrastructure?: A Qualitative Interview Study". This paper was awarded as best paper the area "Infrastructure and Technologies for Engineering Education". LAK20: Chatbots – An Opportunity for Individual Assistance in Education

Last week the 10th Learning Analytics and Knowledge Conference took place in cyberspace. The Edutec Team not only managed to first organize a face-to-face conference on the local campus Westend, prepare everything for a fully blended conference in the university and finally shifted completely to a fully virtual conference in cyberspace - The Edutec team also contributed scientifically to the conference: Beside Atezaz Ahmad et al., who won the Best Poster Award, a second poster by Sebastian Wollny, Jan Schneider, Marc Rittberger and Hendrik Drachsler was presented to over 500 international educational technology scientists. Radio Beitrag zu Online Konferenzen bei Campus & Karriere

Für den März 2020 hatte die Community das zehnjährige Bestehen der Learning Analytics & Knowledge Conference (LAK20) geplant. Dazu hatte das Organisationsteam nach Frankfurt am Main, Deutschland, auf den wunderschönen Campus Westend der Goethe-Universität. Alle hatten sich darauf gefreut, die Leistungen der Community zu feiern und die Organisatorinnen und Organisatoren hatten die Gäste persönlich begrüßen wollen. Beinahe 600 Teilnehmende hatten sich zur Hauptkonferenz registriert. Dies entspricht einer Rekordzahl für diese Tagung. Die Situation änderte sich jäh mit dem Ausbruch des COVID-19 –Virus. International wurden Reisebeschränkungen in Kraft gesetzt, und viele Universitäten erließen Maßnahmen, die eine wachsende Zahl der möglichen Teilnehmenden betrafen. Am 13.
