BR Radio: Roboter statt Lehrerinnen und Lehrer? Wie sollte die Schule der Zukunft aussehen?

Artificial Intelligence, Invited talk, Learning Analytics, Learning Design, Robots in Education, School

Presentation: Atezaz participated in the ICDLE conference and presented a new publication

Artificial Intelligence, Conference, Conference, Feedback, Further Education, Learning Analytics, Lifelong Learning, Open access, Publication, Self-Regulation
Our paper titled "Caught in the Lifelong Learning Maze: Helping People with Learning Analytics and Chatbots to Find Personal Career Paths" was accepted at the 13th International Conference on Distance Learning and Education (ICDLE 2022) held at the University of Barcelona, Spain. Atezaz Ahmad participated in the conference and presented their publication. The article will be published (open access) in the International Journal of Information and Education Technology. Abstract: Current lifelong learning platforms offer users a query option to select a wide variety of courses. However, finding a suitable course among the seemingly endless catalogs of options presented by the platforms is not straightforward. We argue that digital counseling can enhance this process. In this paper, we present a set of three formative studies where we explored the main aspects…

Updates by Jane Yau as a Global Young Academy member

Academy
Since June 2022, Jane Yau has become an official member of the Global Young Academy (GYA) and has participated in a number of ongoing activities in the direction of collaborative contribution towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals. In May, Jane undertook a 2-day online Science Leadership programme. In June, Jane attended the 4-day online Annual Conference with highlights and recordings available on the GYA website. In particular, Jane participated in the Science Advice for Policy-Making Workshop, and gave a lightning talk and panel discussion on the Global Educational Problem, where millions of children and adolescents worldwide don't have access to (quality) education. In October, Jane was selected as one of the reviewers for the UN Global Sustainable Development Report 2023 as well as joined the launch event of the new…

Lebiniz Leadership Academy

Academy
The German Leibniz Association, the network of German research institutes that includes DIPF, now has its new Leadership Academy, a training course entitled "Leadership Development" for early-stage junior research leaders in one of the Leibniz institutes with a maximum of two years of experience in leadership positions. This programme is aimed at junior research group leaders looking for further personal development and guidance in their day-to-day leadership roles. Daniele Di Mitri has been selected on behalf of DIPF to participate in this training course. The course consists of four presence modules about "self-leadership" and "leading people". The first event took place from the 11th to the 13th of October in Berlin, the second will occur in January 2023. For more info about the course, check the Leibniz website.

Shaping AI and the Future of Society @ Herrenhausen Conference and elf Annual Conference

Shaping AI and the Future of Society @ Herrenhausen Conference and elf Annual Conference

Artificial Intelligence, Conference, Digitalisation
The journey from an initial idea to a finished product is generally known to be a long one. At least, this also seems to be the case with the implementation of AI systems that are intended to support various areas of everyday life. With regard to the automated understanding of language and images, AI models have made great progress in recent years and are being used in more and more applications, such as chatbots (see GUDI at Goethe University). The Educational Technologies team is therefore researching AI implementations in the education sector to support teachers and students, as well as to develop autodidactic learning environments. New Pub: Effect of social support features via buddies in app-based habit building

New Pub: Effect of social support features via buddies in app-based habit building

Conference, Publication
During 10-12 October 2022 at the World Conference on Mobile, Blended and Seamless Learning (mLearn), the full paper "Effect of social support features via buddies in app-based habit building" was presented. The paper will also appear in the mLearn 2022 proceedings. The authors of the paper are Daniel Biedermann, Patrick Schwarz, Jane Yau and Hendrik Drachsler. The abstract is as follows: App-based habit building has been shown to be a good tool for building desired habits, however it is unclear how much individual features that are present in many apps contribute to the success of habit building. In this paper, the authors consider the influence of social support features by developing an app in which habit progress was shared with peers. In the study, 38 participants created habits and monitored…

Keynote: Artificial Intelligence and Immersive Technologies for Feedback Augmentation

Invited talk, Keynote
On 5th October 2022, Dr Daniele Di Mitri was invited to give a keynote workshop at the SITE interactive online conference. Keynote Workshop: Artificial Intelligence and Immersive Technologies for Feedback Augmentation Abstract: Twenty-first-century learners are continuously required to nurture their competencies by acquiring new knowledge and mastering new skills. A way to meet this significant demand for learning is to offer learners continuous instruction and timely feedback. In the internet era, learners have access to a large variety of educational content outside formal education curricula, including online courses or video lectures. Unfortunately, access to content alone is not sufficient for guaranteeing learning. What is needed, and often lacking, is proper guidance and feedback. Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems can provide automatic, personalised, real-time feedback to learners in distance learning settings when…

Sebastian Gombert @ EC-TEL 2022 Doctoral Consortium

Artificial Intelligence, Conference, Event, Learning Analytics, Research topic
At EC-TEL 2022, Sebastian Gombert presented his doctoral project "Methods and perspectives for the automated analytic assessment of free-text responses in formative scenarios". The goal behind this project is to build free-text assessment systems which can code constructed responses analytically. While much of the past work in response scoring focused on predicting holistic scores, analytic scoring allows to code free-text responses for multiple different aspects. The goal behind these efforts is to provide learners and teachers with useful feedback on each of them. A more detailed project overview will be released as part of the EC-TEL 2022 doctoral consortium proceedings soon.
