New Pub: Chapter in Learning Analytics Handbook 2022

Higher Education, Learning Analytics
More and more higher education institutions have been making use of learning analytics in the last few years. But despite an increased funding and more research in the learning analytics domain, there is still a lack of systematic and large-scale implementations of learning analytics. In order to improve learning analytics adoption and to establish it sustainably, higher education institutions need to align learning analytics-related activities with their goals and visions. Their making us of data requires a set of guidelines and principles, i.e. a policy, that fits their context and speaks to all involved stakeholders. Only then can the effective and responsible use of learning analytics be ensured and will higher education institutions be truly able to establish learning analytics in a sustainable way. PhD defense: Measuring the Unmeasurable? Towards Automatic Co-located Collaboration Analytics

Artificial Intelligence, Book, Higher Education, Learning Analytics, Multimodal Learning Analytics, PhD defense, Press
Collaboration is one of the most important skills in the 21st century. Education, therefore, focuses on learning to cooperate, both in online and face-to-face settings. Learning Analytics is increasingly being used to analyse collaborations. Can face-to-face collaborations be analysed automatically by means of sensor technology? And what is the quality of the analyses generated by this? Sambit Praharaj developed a technical prototype to achieve automated collaboration analytics. On Friday 11 March 2022 at 1.30 pm Sambit defended his thesis 'Measuring the Unmeasurable? Towards Automatic Co-located Collaboration Analytics' at the Open University in Heerlen. Collaboration analytics using sensor technology Sambit Praharaj investigated the possibilities of automating collaboration analytics in face-to-face settings. He developed a prototype that measures the quality of collaboration. Praharaj also developed a dashboard that visualises the data and…

Webinar: What happens when students get to choose indicators on customisable dashboards?

Webinar: What happens when students get to choose indicators on customisable dashboards?

Conference, Higher Education, Learning Analytics, Webinar
Learning analytics dashboards (LADs) are essentially feedback tools for learners. However, until recently, learners rarely have had a role in designing LADs, especially in deciding the information they would like to receive through such devices. Although learners might not always know what they need to self-manage their learning, we need to understand what type of feedback information and dashboard features they are likely to engage with and if, when, and how they use dashboards. To explore how LADs can better meet the needs of learners, we have embarked on two sets of studies aiming to understand students' information needs. In the first set of studies, we developed a customisable LAD for Coursera MOOCs on which learners can set goals and choose feedback indicators to monitor. We then analysed the learners'…

Guest scientist Prof. José L. Aznarte in Frankfurt

Artificial Intelligence, Higher Education, Learning Analytics, Team
We warmly welcome our guest scientist Prof. José L. Aznarte, who will be visiting the EduTec team at DIPF in Frankfurt until the end of July! Prof. José L. Aznarte is a researcher at the Artificial Intelligence Department of the Spanish Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia – UNED (one of the biggest universities in Europe) and deputy vice rector for digitalization and innovation. He co-leads UNED's ambitious ED3 project ("Distance, Digital and Data-based Education"), which revolves around the improvement possibilities offered by massive-data-based technologies and other AI tools in the framework of learning/teaching processes, particularly in hybrid face-to-face and remote settings. During his stay at DIPF, Professor José L. Aznarte will study the digitalization problem in comparative terms, aiming at getting to know the experiences at DIPF and at…

Artificial Intelligence, Digitalisation, Event, Learning Analytics, Team
So exciting! Today is the "International Day of Women and Girls in Science", initiated by the UN and celebrated annually worldwide on 11 February to promote girls and women in science and research, especially in STEM subjects. Today our members of the EduTec Team,Dana Kube, is having a lunch appointment online at Eindhoven EAISI, where she will exchange ideas with other European women scientists on the topic of "Women in AI"! There is now a global network of women experts in AI and robotics who are advocating for gender-just, ethical and responsible solutions for the benefit of society. Today they are talking about how we in Europe can close the gender gap in AI and robotics and increase women's participation through mentoring, hackathons, and educational initiatives. We are very much…

New project ML2MT: Artificial Intelligence across disciplines

Artificial Intelligence, Learning Analytics, Project, School
With almost 10 million euros in funding, the Volkswagen Foundation encourages research projects that explore how artificial intelligence will affect society. Goethe University Frankfurt (GU) was successful with an application that looks at developments in human-machine interaction in education. "From Machine Learning to Machine Teaching (ML2MT) - Making Machines AND Humans Smarter" - this is the title of the project that the economist Prof. Oliver Hinz applied for in an interdisciplinary project together with colleagues from various subjects. The success of learning machines, as in the prime example of the board game Go (in the computer version "AlphaGo Zero"), has inspired scientists. Their project aims at a better understanding of how humans and machines in collaborative human-AI systems can develop new knowledge in symbiotic interaction with each other. To this…
