New project ML2MT: Artificial Intelligence across disciplines

With almost 10 million euros in funding, the Volkswagen Foundation encourages research projects that explore how artificial intelligence will affect society. Goethe University Frankfurt (GU) was successful with an application that looks at developments in human-machine interaction in education. "From Machine Learning to Machine Teaching (ML2MT) - Making Machines AND Humans Smarter" - this is the title of the project that the economist Prof. Oliver Hinz applied for in an interdisciplinary project together with colleagues from various subjects. The success of learning machines, as in the prime example of the board game Go (in the computer version "AlphaGo Zero"), has inspired scientists. AR4STEAM: Premiere of the documentary film and ceremonial conclusion of the project work

Today we celebrated the successful completion of our joint project work between school and research institute in the innovative STE(A)M labs on an augmented reality (AR) apps and STEM learning. The DIPF and the Adorno Gymnasium in Frankfurt set out to develop and learn STEM topics with AR. The result of this innovative STEM Lab is a great app developed together and a documentary film on the process and results. We celebrate this with the presentation of AR Creator certificates for all students and teachers and 2 tablets, which the project team gives to the school as a thank you for the great cooperation and spirited joint works on the future of learning! Nationale Bildung Plattform (NBP) Brainstorm Meeting

Today, representatives from BMBF, DIPF, studiumdigitale and Open University NL discussed the potentials and challenges of the Nationale Bildung Platform (NBP) initiative by BMBF. The BMBF is following a fresh and new approach to making the NBP actually become a sustainable platform. This was great to see and is a very promising approach for digital education in Germany. We first got a presentation of the KOMZERT project that works on the use case for the NBP. KOMZERT aims to develop a virtualized training program for teachers that enables them to acquire methodological knowledge and digital skills in order to design their own teaching/learning scenarios in such a way that the potential of innovative educational technologies can be exploited. ALICE project workshop

On 12/13 of October the EduTec Team finally hit the road again and met with the ALICE Project partners in Kiel at the IPN for the first post-pandemic f2f Workshop. Wuhuuuuuuuu! The purpose of the 2-day workshop was to work on an instructional model for designing and implementing instructional units in four domains – biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics – and tracking students learning progression with learning analytics during these units. The units will be hybrid in that they will take place in regular classrooms but will involve students working through instructional activities involving digital media. Instruction will be led by a regular teacher but will have students continuously interact with a (tablet) computer. Augmented Reality in the Park in Frankfurt middle school students from Adornogymnasium tried out the augmented reality app in the park next to their school yesterday. a maths and physics question-based parkour in the park was tested. Objects were scanned, volumes calculated, distances estimated and calculated. We are entering the final phase of the project, where we will design a whole lesson together with AR and programme our app for it. exciting late summer leisure activity for teachers and students.

New Pub: A short history, emerging challenges and co-operation structures for Artificial Intelligence in education

To accompany the special issue in Artificial Intelligence and Education, this article presents a short history of research in the field and summarises emerging challenges. We highlight key paradigm shifts that are becoming possible but also the need to pay attention to theory, implementation and pedagogy while adhering to ethical principles. On 29 June 2021, Hendrik Drachsler gave an invited webinar for the SoLAR webinar channel where he reflected the process of applying learning analytics solutions within higher education settings and schools, its implications, and the critical lessons learned in the Trusted Learning Research Program. The talk focused on the experience of edutec.science research collective consisting of researchers from the Netherlands and Germany that contribute to the Trusted Learning Analytics (TLA) research program. The TLA program aims to provide actionable and supportive feedback to students and stands in the tradition of human-centred learning analytics concepts. It, therefore, applies sensor technology to support psychomotor as well as web technology to support meta-cognitive and collaborative learning skills with high-informative feedback methods. Kickoff: HELA – Improving HEI maturity to implement learning analytics

In February 2021, the Croatian Science Foundation (HRZZ) approved funding of the research project "HELA - Improving HEI maturity to implement learning analytics" that will be implemented during the next 4 years at the Faculty of Organization and Informatics (FOI), University of Zagreb under the leadership of Full Prof. Nina Begičević Ređep, PhD The project, which started with its activities on March 1, 2021, will be financed by the HRZZ in the total amount of 776,230.00 HRK.
