New Pub: I don’t have time! But keep me in the loop: Co-designing requirements for a learning analytics cockpit with teachers

Teacher dashboards can help secondary school teachers manage online learning activities and inform instructional decisions by visualising information about class learning. However, when designing teacher dashboards, it is not trivial to choose which information to display, because not all of the vast amount of information retrieved from digital learning environments is useful for teaching. Information elicited from formative assessment (FA), though, is a strong predictor for student performance and can be a useful data source for effective teacher dashboards. Especially in the secondary education context, FA and feedback on FA, have been extensively studied and shown to positively affect student learning outcomes. Workshop: “Anwendungsfelder von (KI-) Lerntechnologien” Klausurtagung Landesamt für Schule und Bildung Sachsen

Auf der 2. Klausurtagung des Landesamts für Schule und Bildung Sachsen, die am 22. und 23. August 2023 in Meißen stattfand, leitete Onur Karademir einen Workshop mit dem Titel "Anwendungsfelder von (KI-) Lerntechnologien". Der Schwerpunkt lag auf den Gelingensbedingungen für den Transfer von Bildungsinnovationen im Bereich EdTech in Schulen. Im Rahmen des Workshops wurden verschiedene Lerntechnologien im Bildungskontext vorgestellt, darunter Intelligente Tutorensysteme (ITS), Teacher-Dashboards sowie automatische Freitextauswertung und Feedback-Generierung. Besonderes Augenmerk lag auf der Diskussion des Potenzials von ITS und Adaptiven Lernsystemen. Diese Werkzeuge bieten die Möglichkeit zur skalierbaren Binnendifferenzierung, indem sie individuelles Lernen in eigenem Tempo und auf individuellem Niveau während Selbstlernphasen ermöglichen. Sebastian Gombert und Onur Karademir, Forscher am DIPF im Bereich KI in der Bildung und Learning Analytics, leiteten am 18. Juli 2023 unseren Workshop "Künstliche Intelligenz in der Bildung: Chancen, Herausforderungen für die Gesellschaft". Ziel war es, Schlüsselfragen anzugehen: Wie unterstützen KI-getriebene Lerntechnologien Lehren und Lernen? Welche Forschungsbeispiele illustrieren Möglichkeiten und Grenzen? Wie können wir mit KI-Sprachmodelle wie GPT oder LLaMA automatisiert wirksames Feedback erstellen? Welche Potenziale und Risiken ergeben sich aus KI-gestützter Bildungstechnologie? Workshop: Teacher Dashboards supported by AI-generated Feedback @ JTEL Summer School 2023

At the JTEL Summer School 2023 in La Manga, Spain, we hosted the “Teacher Dashboards supported by AI-generated Feedback” workshop. In this workshop, the Learning Analytics Cockpit (LA Cockpit), a tool developed by us, was presented and optimized by the participants. The LA Cockpit is a teacher dashboard that allows teachers to view the learning status of students through different visualizations and to interact with these visualizations to send feedback to (individual or groups of) students through a feedback system to “steer" the learning process. After a short intro on teacher dashboards and feedback theory, the tool with its visual feedback system was be tested "hands-on" by all participants in the workshop. New Pub: Designing the Learning Analytics Cockpit – A Dashboard that Enables Interventions

This paper presents results from our design and evaluation studies of the Learning Analytics Cockpit (LA Cockpit) for a quiz app, which aims to provide lecturers with important information about students’ knowledge levels. We define a LA Cockpit as a tool for instructors that enables them to steer students’ learning process by providing a LA Dashboard which visualizes students’ learning indicators and an intervention feature enabling instructors to give feedback based on students’ knowledge levels. To address the needs of lecturers we applied the Double Diamond (DD) design process model which consists of four stages: discover, define, develop & refine. Following the DD process, we first conducted a qualitative study by interviewing four lecturers and student teachers to discover their needs. Onur Karademir joins the team

Starting February 1st 2021 Onur Karademir joins the EduTec team as a PhD candidate. During his studies in M.Sc. Computer Science at the Goethe University Frankfurt he worked at the studential think thank #DigitalChangeMaker of Hochschulreform Digitalisierung. After graduating he founded in 2020 the StartUp StudyCore which delivers EdTech Tools for Universities and Schools. In his research Onur will be working on various Learning Analytics algorithms to distinguish successful learning strategies and extract the acquired skills in a learning environment. Furthermore he will be working on didactical feedback to support the individual learning process.
