The entire EduTec team warmly congratulates Atezaz Ahmad on his remarkable journey, as he has successfully defended his PhD thesis and now holds the distinguished title of Dr. Atezaz Ahmad.
In a compelling and rigorous defense, Atezaz presented his groundbreaking research, titled: “Uncharted Territories: Learning Analytics Indicators from a Learning Design Perspective”.

His PhD dissertation explores the intersection of Learning Design (LD) and Learning Analytics (LA) and addresses the long-standing challenge of their limited alignment. While LD focuses on structuring meaningful learning activities, LA provides data-driven insights into learning processes and outcomes, yet their connection has often remained fragmented. To bridge this gap, the thesis introduces the Learning Analytics and Design Alignment (LADA) framework, a comprehensive reference model that explicitly links LD principles with LA practices by connecting learning goals, activities, outcomes, metrics, and indicators. In addition, the thesis presents practical tools, OpenLAIR (an evidence-based LA indicators repository), LAxplore (an NLP tool to keep OpenLAIR current), and LAxplore 2.0 (to improve accuracy and trust in LAxplore), which systematically map LA indicators and automate the extraction of relevant LD-LA elements from existing literature. Together, the framework and tools provide both a conceptual foundation and practical resources for researchers, educators, and practitioners to create more coherent, consistent, and actionable uses of LA. By doing so, this work contributes to reducing fragmentation in the field, promoting standardization, and laying the groundwork for more structured and intentional applications of LA in education.
The journey through these uncharted territories is detailed in his defense presentation, which you can view here:

Atezaz Ahmad’s journey to becoming Dr. Ahmad was a true voyage through uncharted territories, beginning with a tentative application from Pakistan that blossomed into a profound scholarly pursuit. He navigated the overwhelming seas of existing literature, responding not with despair but with groundbreaking contributions, such as his highly cited review and the creation of enduring systems like OpenLAIR and LAxplore, designed to guide future researchers. His path was marked by personal challenges, from visa struggles and pandemic isolation to building a new life for his family in Germany, all of which he met with the same dignity and systematic resolve he applied to his research. Ultimately, his journey was one of building bridges: between learning design and analytics, between theory and practice, and between cultures, culminating in the well-earned title of Doctor and a lasting gift to the scientific community.
We look forward to seeing your continued impact and wish you every success in the path ahead, Dr. Ahmad!
